How to Be a Wise Man in 12 Easy Steps

This article was inspired by my personal reading of the Book of Proverbs and is based on advice taken from the first nine chapters of the book.  This part of the book is written as if from a father to a son and it gives a good foundation on how we should live our lives how to act in our relationships with others. The Book of Proverbs is God's instructions to us on how to live wisely, or rather how the wise man should develop his character, live his life and conduct his affairs.  It also talks a lot about what temptations we should avoid so that we can keep our slates clean, walk the straight and narrow path, and live a peaceful and joyful life in the light of God.   Wisdom is the art of living wisely.  It is a Grace given to us by God.   I have picked out twelve of my favorite little snippets of wisdom to help you along your journey down the straight and narrow path.  So, if you want to live the good life of a wise man, then read on. Step #1: Listen to Your Parents  Your parents ar

The Book of Proverbs - Chapter 9 - Personal Bible Study - The Two Banquets

This is the last chapter of before we get into the shorter bits of wisdom which comprises the rest of The Book of Proverbs.  I need to put a disclaimer here.  This is my own personal study of this book.  I am not an expert.  I am not a biblical scholar.  I am not even wise.  I am just doing my best to interpret it.  I am putting it here because I would love to open it up for discussion.  I would love to see your thoughts in the comments.  But nobody reads it anyway.   The two titles in this chapter are The Way of Wisdom and The Way of Folly .   In my own personal Bible, it uses the title:  The Two Banquets .   Wisdom and Folly are personified and are inviting you to their banquets.   Folly is the opposite of wisdom.  Wisdom is living wisely, and Folly is living recklessly and foolishly.   The other word here to consider is the " Way ".  In a college class I took on Eastern Philosophy, the Way (Tao) had a significant meaning.   It had to do with the natural order of things or

The Book of Proverbs - Chapter 8 - Personal Bible Study

I am now at Chapter 8 of my written study on the book of Proverbs.  I did take a few days break from this from Good Friday to Easter Sunday but now it's time to get back to it.   I have to read through these for a couple days before I start writing.  It seems like I get more out of it if I do it this way.  Something new every time you read it.   Perhaps you need to be in the right frame of mind.  Perhaps God chooses when you begin to understand what is being said.   The beauty of it is that although this was written for the ancient world, it is still relevant in modern times.  I am understanding it in the context of the world I live in.  I can relate to what's being said based on my own understanding of the world. The Excellence of Wisdom 1 Does not wisdom call out, and understanding raise her voice? Yes it does.  Ask anybody who knew better but did it anyway.  Ask anybody who got into something without understanding what they were getting themselves into and lost because of it

Monster Truck Show

Do you know what the best part about being a single dad is?   When you get to do cool stuff with your kid like... going to a Monster Truck show... and her loving every minute of it. It was awesome!!!  It was fast!  It was wild and loud!  She could yell and scream, which is one of her favorite things to do anyway, but this is an appropriate venue for that kind of behavior.   Galactatron They always add something cool.  The last time I went to one of these shows with my older daughter, it was motorcycle stunt riders.  This time it was Galactatron vs. Reptar.  It was definitely different.  Two real life Transformers throwing flames and battling it out. Reptar What a night!  Woo Hoo!!!

Happy Easter

 He has risen.

The Book of Proverbs - Chapter 7 - Personal Bible Study - This one is for the guys

If we are to learn anything from this, it would be that women are the downfall of man.  This particular topic is harped on quite a bit in this book.  You would think that we get the point but no.  Men think with their penises.    Warnings about the Adulteress 1 My son, keep my words and treasure my commandments within you. 2 Keep my commandments and live; guard my teachings as the apple of your eye. 3 Tie them to your fingers; write them on the tablet of your heart. 4 Say to wisdom, “You are my sister,” and call understanding your kinsman, 5 that they may keep you from the adulteress, from the stranger with seductive words. You should know better, and your parents should instill these kinds of values in you.   6 For at the window of my house I looked through the lattice. 7 I saw among the simple, I noticed among the youths, a young man lacking judgment, 8 crossing the street near her corner, strolling down the road to her house, 9 at twilight, as the day was fading into the dark of the

The Book of Proverbs - Chapter 6 - Personal Bible Study - Miscellaneous Proverbs and Warnings Against Adultery

Chapter 6 is changing things up a bit.  The heading in my Bible calls it "Miscellaneous Proverbs."   1 My son, if you have put up security for your neighbor, if you have struck hands in pledge with a stranger, 2 if you have been trapped by the words of your lips, ensnared by the words of your mouth, 3 then do this, my son, to free yourself, for you have fallen into your neighbor’s hands: Go, humble yourself, and press your plea with your neighbor. 4 Allow no sleep to your eyes or slumber to your eyelids. 5 Free yourself, like a gazelle from the hand of the hunter, like a bird from the snare of the fowler. The footnotes in my Bible says this is like an ancient version of contract law.  Perhaps it's like making a promise that you are expected to keep but can't.  Getting out of a contract that you can't fulfill.  You need to humble yourself and try to get out of it or avoid the situation in the first place.     6 Walk in the manner of the ant, O slacker; observe its

My middle child got her own place

I'm not really sure how I feel right now.   My middle child just got her own place and moved out today.  I just went over to see it.  It's nice.   I mean I'm proud of her.  I'm happy for her, but I'm sad.  It is making me feel my age.  I mean it was just yesterday that she was my little girl and now she is a beautiful young lady.  It was just yesterday that I was fighting for her through the special education system.   It was just last night that she came home for the last time living under my roof. It seems like it was just yesterday that my whole family was together.  I have been a single parent for going on 4 years now.  I now have two who are grown up and on their own.  My oldest is 25 and has been on her own for 5 years.   Being a single dad has been a difficult blessing.  It still is.  I still have one child left at home.  She is only ten so it will be a while before I can call myself an empty nester, but it's a totally bittersweet moment. She will always
